    Well, to be entirely accurate, the gulf mess happened on our shores so it has nothing to do with energy independence, unless the cartoon refers to dependence on oil rather than other countries for oil in which case its time to get serious about “oil independence”.

    I agree there is an addiction with oil with very feeble attempts to break it in the past. I shudder at the thought that a federal judge could overturn a temporary ban on offshore drilling until stronger safety measures are implemented. There seems to be a mentality that oil jobs and the flow of oil is more important than the possibility of more spills. One of the arguments is that oil jobs could move elsewhere but the reality is that other countries are implementing strong measures as well.

    The first and pretty much only president who attempted to work on our dependence on oil was Carter, and he was completely shut down by big oil working together with corporate-owned politicians. It was sad, and we’ve ignored the problem ever since (and gone back to just fighting wars over oil).
