Political Typology

Pew Research has an interesting (but short) quiz that can help you identify your politics.

I wouldn’t take it too seriously, since I don’t think the labels “conservative” and “liberal” actually have any meaning anymore, but it is a fun diversion.

Yes, but I liked that the “flaming liberal” group was the biggest. Possibly because they chopped up the conservative group. I also liked the comparison of education. Exactly as I have long suspected. Also the NASCAR watchers.

I thought the folks at Pew Research would have done a much better job of this. Now how will I know who to trust. Libertarian and socialist weren’t even on the chart and I wouldn’t agree with either answer on a significant number of questions. And I’m insulted I came out to the right of Ron Paul. I must have misread the questions I did answer. ;>D Or not.

I didn’t like the questions, it was too black and white. They made me a post modern, whatever that means. But, I didn’t fit in even with that group. Oh well. I least I know who I really am, i’m, uh, wait a minute, it’s coming, awe shucks I forgot again.

I don’t generally care for this particular division of the Pew. It does too many polls and not enough real research. That is exactly what this is. It’s not meant to be generalizable, even though they make it out to be. They should make it more of a scale to capture the nuance of people’s political opinions. Indeed, what they are calling a typology is best described as a set of “ideal types” because are basically the concatenations of the most common clusters of characteristics, at least in their view.

With that said, they described me pretty well. They did miss my political party affiliation (I’m unenrolled) and my dietary choices (I do not seek out organic foods; we do have a vegetable garden but that is my husband’s thing, not mine). But that is also probably because I answered all of the questions even though I probably only lean one way or another, not because I entirely agree with the statement.

Wow, Starluna with your response (which i agree) I noticed also that they apparantly ask different questions. I got none on organic foods or dietary choices. Is that normal?

PatriotSGT: I felt the same way. I feel I do belong in the group it put me with, but the questions were way too black and white.

Did they change the results or something, though? ‘Flaming liberal’ was not an option when I got to the end of the quiz. And they DID include ‘libertarian’ (but not ‘socialist’).

I laughed out loud when I saw the bit about NASCAR for some of the other groups, though.

The organic food thing was the descriptions of a solid liberal. I don’t know how normal it is to ascribe dietary choices to political orientations.

I was just kidding about the “flaming liberal” “not meant to be factual” That’s what I call myself. I fit in the most Liberal.

I like Starluna’s “unenrolled”. the Independents run candidates so I can no longer call myself an Independent. “Unenrolled” is a nice way to put it.

I never like forced choice surveys and tests because by definition the results are not nuanced. Change one or two words in each choice and I’d have answered the other way.

I do wish one of the choices had been Teddy Roosevelt’s use of an African proverb: “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” That’s pretty much my approach to diplomacy and the continuation there of.

In MA, there is an Independent Party (which is libertarian). When I first moved here, I mistakenly checked “Independent” when I registered to vote thinking that it meant the same thing as in CA. When I went to vote in the primary I learned my mistake. People who do not want to be associated with any party must register as unenrolled. If you are unenrolled, you can choose to vote in any party’s primary (only one, though). In MA, the majority of voters are registered as unenrolled.

LOL nice pun, Don in Texas 🙂 I came out post modern as well on this quiz, but agree that the quesitons and the calculated result are not that useful.

No Labels has a nice graphic of the US, showing first the state color (red/blue), which makes it look like we’re a very divided nation, and then the same map at the oucnty level – at which point almost the entire country goes purple 🙂 The point is that people are people, and while there are certain trends in certian areas, the majority of us don’t fit neatly into any category.

Spoken as a gun-loving, social liberal, fiscal conservative, defense supportive, and environmentally protective citizen.

2.think weird people are just weird and some are evil.
3.get a shiver when you hear the Star Spangled Banner sung by a great singer.
4.get slightly irritated at people who are not good at talking on cell phones and driving.
    5. you realize that health experts want people to exercise moderation when they eat fries or cheeseburgers and aren’t really trying to control me.
    6. think truly evil people (serial killers/rapists) ought to be put in jail forever because sometimes we get it wrong and convict the wrong person, especially if they are poor and/or black.
    7. wish I could hand out a ticket to people who litter and punch them in the face.
    8. think people ought to be able to get married, to whoever they want.
    9. feel it’s a privilege to say the pledge of allegiance, but hate when people politicize it and know damn well these people don’t say it daily themselves now that there’s no school teacher telling them to.
    10. not ashamed to say I’m from the USA and think its the best damn nation to ever exist, but realize we can always do better.

    😉 Just poking fun, Patriot.

Hmm, Post-Modern for me. I guess since that is one notch left of center, it is fitting. Many of the answers were biased, so I skipped some questions.

    I noticed that:
“Wall Street helps the American economy more than it hurts” was agreed by 61% of PMs, but only 38% of the general public. I ALSO noticed that “Wall Street” was never asked about in my questions/choices, although there were several questions about my general economic well-being.
