Usually, when you see that word, you think about Donald Trump, but not this week! The grifter supreme right now is Clarence Thomas. Thomas was young and inexperienced when he was nominated to the Supreme Court by George H. W. Bush, having spent only one year as a judge. He was confirmed, despite attorney Anita Hill testifying that Thomas sexually harassed her when he was the chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where she worked as an advisor to him.
Thomas is unusual in that he almost never asks any questions, or even speaks, during oral arguments for cases before the SCOTUS. This, combined with the fact that he is also the most conservative justice on the court, seems to imply that he has already made up his mind on most issues.
What’s worse is that while Trump’s grift is technically legal (consisting mainly of fleecing his followers for political donations), Thomas, who as a lawyer should know better, accepted lavish gifts from at least one billionaire, and then did not declare them, as required by law. Making him even more suspect is the fact that his wife Virginia is a far-right GOP activist, who still believes the false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump, and who played a role in the illegal plot and insurrection to overturn that election on Jan 6. Despite this, Justice Thomas refuses to recuse himself from these cases where he has a clear conflict of interest.
Is it any surprise that trust in the Supreme Court is at a historic low?
