It’s amazing that people don’t understand that the first people the Nazi’s rounded up when they took power (after the Reichstag fire) were the Socialists and Communists. It’s a sign of how poor the American education system is.

@Bard: I’m not sure it’s an indictment of the education system as much as it’s proof that a propaganda machine can make people believe anything. And when you have a certain segment of the population that gets its news and information from one source (Fox News), and who truly believes Google is liberally slanted (yes, I’ve actually heard this), it’s even easier to pound disinformation and outright contradictory lies into them…and have them believe the lies and not see the contradictions.

I’d say you’re both right – the two reinforce each other. If we don’t learn how to think, it’s easy for those who want to do the thinking for us to do so.

If Google has a liberal slant, then I guess the dictionary has a liberal slant! I guess they will need to rewrite the dictionary to remove all those liberal words!

IK: Re-writing the dictionary could happen! There was a brief (and then vanished) AP article right after Obama’s election reporting that some religious group wanted to re-write the Bible to reflect conservative values because: “all of the translators down through the years were liberals.” I find this ironic because the very last words in the book that fundamentalists reverence so says not to change anything in it that had been set down! So if the Bible is up for grabs, Webster’s doesn’t stand a chance!
Of all the articles that I read in 2010, this one seemed to be a “nutshell” explanation of the retionale of the extreme right!

Did anything ever come of that effort to rewrite the bible to be more conservative?

It wouldn’t surprise me after they started rewriting the bible.

Re-writing the bible is nothing new. Why do you think there are so many versions of it?

Thats my problem with the various religious clubs (i mean denominations). They all seem to use a different version that suits their philosophy and rules.

Laurie, unfortunately I stopped subscribing to any club a number of years ago and instead believe in spirituality instead of religiosity. It suites my belief system better. I also presribe to the notion that people can dtermine my spirituality by looking at my actions not listening to my words. Have a good new year!!

Oops! I didn’t mean to point out anything but the chasm in the minds of folks who DO buy that stuff, but only when it reflects what they already want to believe — hence, if their religion tells them to act in one way and their politics are diametrically opposed to those actions, they have to re-write one set of rules or the other to keep their [sic sanity!] 🙂
