Comedian in Chief

Some of the jokes Obama told at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner:

  • It’s been quite a year since I’ve spoken here last — lots of ups, lots of downs — except for my approval ratings, which have just gone down. But that’s politics. It doesn’t bother me. Beside I happen to know that my approval ratings are still very high in the country of my birth.
  • Obviously I’m most pleased that Michelle accompanied me. She doesn’t always go to these things. And there are few things in life that are harder to find and more important to keep than love — well, love and a birth certificate.
  • The Jonas Brothers are here. … Sasha and Malia are huge fans. But, boys, don’t get any ideas. I have two words for you — predator drones. You will never see it coming. You think I’m joking.
  • I saw Michael Steele backstage when we were taking pictures — AKA Notorious GOP. Michael, who knows what truly plagues America today — taxation without representin’. My brother.
  • I’ve learned this year politics can be a tough business, but there are times where you just can’t help but laugh. You know what really tickles me? Eric Massa. Apparently Massa claimed that Rahm came up to him one day in the House locker room, stark naked, started screaming obscenities at him. To which I say, welcome to my world.

What’s the over/under on how fast a right-wing email chain will begin with Obama’s “country of birth” quote taken out of context and given as “proof” he’s not American?

I’m not sure I was in love with him. I preferred him over the other choices. But I had a list of things he supported that I did not like. Opening up additional off-shore oil drilling sites, for one.

He is good looking, though. I’ll give you that.

The lines read better than they sound. His delivery was weak this year.

I thought maybe a couple of the jokes were improper. The joke about Goldman sachs will probably not sit well with regular GS employees who don’t get the 6 figure bonuses but are wondering what could happen to their job if clients keep leaving. I also can’t figure out why he’s giving prominence to a ditz like sarah palin. He was funny though with his delivery. I was thinking that perhaps he should have gone down to Louisiana that day and not attended the dinner as a sign to the ones affected by the oil slick that instead of screwing around he was doing something.

Starluna, I don’t think there is any way to avoid opening up additional offshore platforms. Since we didn’t have an energy policy from 2000-2008 or sad to say even the 8 years prior, there is nothing that will replace the cheap energy that oil will provide. Is the cost associated with offshore oil rigs worth it? Thats a tough question to answer after the oil spill. While offshore drilling won’t satisfy all our energy needs it should provide a stop gap until we have an alternative thats economical.
