    Seriously, though, some jobs go away and others get created, and a significant percentage of job losses in any recession are cascade impacts – fewer people buy houses, so contractors get laid off, so they cant buy cars, so car salesmen get laid off . . .

    Many of those cascade jobs will come back with any significant new industries or growth, but the directly impacted industries won’t – those steel mill and lumbering jobs ain’t coming back. Which is why we need to keep trying to open new avenues for growth, whether that’s pioneering green products, nanotech, or whatever turns out to be a winner.
