Why are we training terrorists?

According to a story by Seymour Hersh in The New Yorker, between 2005 and 2007, US was secretly training members of a known terrorist group. So if someone (like you or me) donated some money to the group, they could be jailed for supporting terrorism, but the US government provided training in the use of weapons, cryptography, and small-unit tactics, at a secret site in Nevada right here in the USA.

President Reagon sold arms to Iran to finance undisclosed war in Guatemala. Did not make that big of a splash with the public to my recollection.

Although Guatemala was in the mix of Reagan’s Central American scheming, the focus of Iran/Contra’s activities was on providing weapons and funding to the contras in Nicaragua. Although Reagan had some very interesting ties with Guatemala, including selling arms to its right wing dictator as well as apparently receiving large campaign contributions prior to his election in 1980, the administration changed it’s position and eventually supported a democratically elected, socialist leaning president.
