I’d like to point out that it isn’t “the Presidential race” that’s going lower and lower. It’s the GOP side of the Presidential race. The Democratic candidates are both sticking not merely to substantive issues, they’re discussing contrasting positive plans as opposed to the continuous negative GOP drumbeat that’s gone on ever since Mr. Obama was elected. The Republicans seem to have nothing to offer but fear itself.
When one of two possible options is THAT bad, it does lower the overall election. Right-thinking people are left with no choice at all, which is terrible for a republic.
Good point Thatguy. I’ve never wanted the Republican Party to die, I just want them to become a real choice compared to the Democrats. I’m still concerned that Clinton will triangulate to the right in order to pick up as many Republicans as possible for the general election. I can’t really blame her, but it is still annoying.
It seems to me that the reason the Republicans have become whack jobs is that they have so much money pouring into them (thanks, Citizens United) and favorable media coverage (thanks, Fox News) that they can still win elections even when they don’t represent any of the interests of their voters.
My big question is, how do we get Democrats similarly activated. As Sanders is finding out, it is hard enough to get his supporters (especially young people) to even bother to show up for elections, and even when they do, they disengage right afterwards. What the right has done successfully is keep their base fired up and donating money, time, and lots of political noise (how else do you explain that Obamacare is still very unpopular, even though when surveyed, the same people like everything it did).
