People really have no idea what muslims have went through since 9/11
Just the insensitive people, i.e. people that don’t visit this site.
A mosque that pre-dates the World Trade Center already exists four blocks from where the towers used to stand, and it has been there for over 40-years. People really are retarded.
I don’t recall reading about what the families of the NYC victims have to say about this.
It’s hard to tell who is for or against with the competing cable news networks (left and right) running their unbalanced commentary. I’ve probably heard of as many for as against. I’ve heard of a local jewish group for, I’ve heard of 911 families for and against. Bottom line the law should and will support it. Unless their is a zoning change disallowing all religous facilities within X feet of the site.
Part of me says we should allow it to show our tolerance and capacity to forgive. Another part thinks it is a plan by some small amount of radical elements to rub our nose in 911 (assault from within using our systemagainst us).
I’m 50/50 on this one. Let New Yorkers hold a referendum vote and decide whats best for their community. The rest of us should stay out of their business.

I’ve seen polls that show the people who live on Manhattan island support it.

The majority can’t vote on the rights of the minority. If Christians could build a church there, then Muslims can build their community center / tolerance Museum / Mosque.
C.S. Brings up a very important point that makes our country great and that few Americans fully understand:

This is why we have a constitution and a bill of rights. Amazing how few Tea Party folks actually get this.
While 9/11 may have changed how we fly it ought not change our constitution.
True and agreed, the law and constitution is clearly in favor of building the mosque. The only legal way to stop it is by local zoning changes, and all religious facilities would have to follow the rule, just not muslim.
Correct, when we are talking about rights granted in the constitution then they cannot be voted away. (although local govt’s continually try to regulate away 2nd amend rights, ie. chicago)
