You won’t get transparency, believing politicians promises is a silly thing to do.

I love quotations. Especially when they are provided without proof that they’re actually true.
The only argument against the Patriot Act I’ve ever heard was the slippery slope. That’s just not enough to get me riled up over it. I think there’s a distinction made between using extra powers to actually attempt to hinder the activities of international terrorist networks who’ve already penetrated U.S. society and whatever it is the rest of us are afraid that the eavesdropping will be used for.
Hell, most of us grew up thinking that the government was always listening in on our phone calls anyway, that they had some kind of supercomputer that was triggered by keywords like “president,” “assasinate,” and “pretzel.”
I would think that in any case that came to trial in which non-terrorists were defendants that use of the Patriot Act powers would be ruled inadmissable. If it weren’t, it would result in extremely bad consequences for Uncle Sam; that’s how bloody revolutions are begun.
I’ve heard arguments that say the extensions of power have made us safer and I’ve heard arguments that say they haven’t. I’ve yet to see any real effort for the latter argument to be proven by anything but an appeal to emotions or by using a well-known quote from two hundred years ago.
