All Obama’s Fault

© Matt Davies

I’m sure someone would blame Obama for rainy weather if they could.

Ironically, Fox News said it best when they declared “no President has the power to increase or to lower gas prices” and that the best way to reduce gas prices is to reduce consumption, so Americans should “get rid of those gas guzzlers, buy decent insulation for your house.” Of course, they said those things in 2008, defending Bush. Nowadays they are blaming Obama, of course.

I think that the message that Obama is at fault for gas prices is resonating well in conservative groups and with the viewers of FOX News, but I think that the rest of the nation understands that it’s simply not his fault.

The GOP is going to have to rethink their strategy a bit if they want to make gas prices a political issue. Their plans to drill our way to lower prices at the pump is just as ridiculous, yet they push it whenever they can. Eventually, they’re going to run into the solid wall of reality and have to explain why they didn’t see it coming.

I think the Republican party is still running under the assumption that if you repeat something often enough, it becomes reality (even if it isn’t). Or at least becomes reality enough to influence the next election. Look at the whole man-made global warming thing, evolution, etc.

Reality has little to do with it. If they can convince the voters that their plan is real, they can get away with it. When it doesn’t work, blame the Democrats.

My memory might be a bit fuzzy, but didn’t Gas prices go up in 2008 and drop like a rock after Obama said he was going to investigate whether the companies were manipulating the market?

Bard, most of the drop in gas prices had to do with the market tanking.

The SF Chronicle has been all over the gas price increases – much of it coming from Bloomberg. You might also try http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/02/29/BUN71NDJQG.DTL&ao=all

One of the reasons that gas prices are rising? We export it. According to an article from Bloomberg last December, “starting in 2008, the country began exporting more refined petroleum products than it imported. And the gap keeps growing.”
