Double Edged Sword?

Conservative media are unfailing boosters of Donald Trump and his administration, but this can also pose a significant (and surprising) risk. The problem is that Trump and his close advisors have become so comfortable with conservative media, that they are starting to say things that are extremely damaging.

We had another example of it this week. Trump was speaking with The Daily Caller (who love to give Trump glowing coverage) when he accidentally linked his appointment of Matt Whitaker as Attorney General to the effort to shut down Robert Mueller’s investigation of Trump. In other words, Trump pretty much admitted to obstructing justice.

But it isn’t just Trump — Rudy Giuliani has often fallen into this trap. Giuliani told Fox News that Trump’s travel ban was meant to satisfy the president’s campaign promise to ban Muslims from entering the US. A religious ban would be a clear violation of the constitution.

In another example, Giuliani told Sean Hannity that Trump knew all about paying off Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet, and even provided the funds (even though Trump denied even knowing about it).

And Trump himself admitted that he knew about the Story Daniels payoff during a rant on “Fox and Friends”.

I guess when you surround yourself with “yes men” and media that always agree with you, you start thinking that you can do no wrong. Combined with people who can’t keep their mouths shut, this is a dangerous combination.

Glenn Kessler, who does fact checking at the WaPo, has an article in today’s issue that breaks down every Trump lie, half-lie and clueless accusation Trump made in that Daily Caller interview. A link for those interested: https://wapo.st/2zeGWGB

The man clearly lives in his own tiny bubble and seems incapable of accepting anything but his own version of the “truth”, which he apparently absorbs primarily during his “Executive Time” watching Faux Noise, Infowars and Breitbart. And just making shit up of course, like all the people he says voted, returned to their cars to put on a disguise or change of clothes and return to vote again. Now there’s a fashion show I’d actually pay to watch!

He’s got to be either severely brain damaged or thinks so little of his base (or both) to think he can float such bizarre BS as reality.

And speaking of Whitaker, Real Time’s Bill Maher had a piece during his New Rules segment last week that ran down a list of disturbing, if not alarming, actions Trump has taken (or not, as with his refusal to release his tax forms) that amounts to nothing less than, as he calls it, a Slow-Moving Coup.

Or to paraphrase his historic muse, Benito Mussolini, whom he has quoted in several tweets (knowingly, or more likely not) once quipped, “A chicken doesn’t notice being plucked when it’s only one feather at a time”.

Not to monopolize the comments board, but along this topic, and adding to Maher’s list, almost forgot to share my tweet ‘o the week:

Actually, he is showing that he can kill a guy in 5th avenue and get away with it. As long as there are Trump cultist out there, he can do whatever he wants, and there are enough people who will vote and defend him
