McCain – what is he hiding about his military record?

On Sunday, Gen. Wesley Clark said that McCain’s military service, while honorable, did not necessarily prepare McCain to be a good president.

What is interesting to me is that the McCain himself went on the offensive immediately, trotting out a number of retired military men — including Bud Day, one of the original Swift Boat veterans — to condemn Clark’s comments. As you might recall, the Swift Boat veterans were a 527 group that attacked John Kerry’s military service in a number of TV ads, ads that at the time were denounced by John McCain as “dishonest and dishonorable”.

Why is this interesting?  Because Clark did not actually attack McCain’s military service, just the idea that his military service somehow means that one cannot question McCain’s military judgement. In fact, Clark praised McCain’s service. McCain also attacked Obama, denouncing “the kind of campaign Sen. Obama and his surrogates and supporters want to engage in,” even though Obama consistently praises McCain’s service, calling him “a genuine American hero.” (On the other hand, Bud Day directly and dishonestly attacked Kerry’s service four years ago.)

So, when someone completely overreacts to a mild criticism, it makes me think they are trying to hide something. You know, like when you make a mild comment about someone having a drink at a party and they freak out and accuse you of calling them a drunk.

So what could McCain be hiding about his service? Well, here are a few things we do know about it:

Those are the things that McCain has admitted to. The more interesting part is that (unlike John Kerry) John McCain has never released all his military records, preferring to keep them secret. Even the stuff we do know about McCain’s record should cause us to ask some serious questions. But McCain doesn’t want any of those questions answered, and will use known liars to attack anyone who dares to ask even the most innocuous question.

UPDATE: Wesley Clark is not backing down, and other military men are coming to his defense.

UPDATE 2: During a McCain campaign conference call (his second on the subject in as many days) McCain surrogate Orson Swindle said:

General Clark probably wouldn’t get that much praise from this group. I can’t speak for them, but we all know that General Clark, as high-ranking as he is, his record in his last command I think was somewhat less than stellar.

So let me get this straight. The McCain campaign is claiming that it is unacceptable to attack someone’s military record, and to prove their point they attack Clark’s military record — except that Clark didn’t actually attack McCain’s record. Incidentally, Clark’s last command was as the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO.

UPDATE 3: Despite what the media keeps repeating, McCain wasn’t actually a fighter pilot, he was a bomber pilot. On 60 Minutes in 1997 he said “I am a war criminal. I bombed innocent women and children.”

Bill Kristol sucks

Now that neocon ideology has utterly failed, its proponents don’t seem to know when to shut up and go home. Take Bill Kristol, who appeared on Fox News Sunday this morning and suddenly started acting like Hillary Clinton’s best friend:

I think Hillary Clinton was gracious. She’s put behind her the horrible sexism and misogyny the Democratic primary voters demonstrated, which I’m appalled by personally, never would have happened in the Republican Party.

Aha! So it was the Democratic voters who were misogynous! You mean like the person who said this?

The only people for Hillary Clinton are the Democratic establishment and white women… it would be crazy for the Democratic party to follow the establishment that’s led them to defeat year after year… White Women are a problem – but, you know… we all live with that…

Oh wait, that was Kristol himself, also speaking on Fox News. But that would never happen in the Republican party.

Hmmm, what about Republican operative Alex Castellanos, who said that it is OK to call some women bitches, and in Hillary’s case “it’s accurate”. Or Marc Rudov (also on Fox News!) saying that Clinton’s “nagging voice” was the reason she lost.

Taxes are for the little people — McCain condo in default for 4 years

According to Newsweek magazine, the McCains failed to pay property taxes on a condo they own in La Jolla, California for four years. Notified of this by Newsweek, the McCains paid (yesterday) for the last four years, but are still late in their payments for this year.

UPDATE: The location of the condo in question was posted to The Jed Report. From there, it is a simple exercise to find the building, and then look it up on Zillow. Here it is. Zillow lists the property taxes for 2007 as $11,229 — note that this is a unit in the same complex, and may not be the same unit owned by the McCains. But the Newsweek article says that the total unpaid taxes for the last four years are $6,744.42, with another $1,742 owed for 2008. Am I missing something? Why are the McCains paying around 15% of normal taxes?

UPDATE2: As people have pointed out, due to Proposition 13, property taxes in California are based on the purchase price of the property, not the current value. The McCains simply must have purchased the condo from the Spanish before California became part of the USA. But seriously, does someone know the exact unit owned by the McCains, so we can look up its purchase date and price?

McCain – Two-faced Maverick of Convenience

The McCain campaign (and much of the mainstream media) keeps trying to keep alive the myth of McCain the Maverick, but it is clearly on life support, and getting a bit crazy. In a conference call today, a McCain spokeswoman tried to compare McCain’s bipartisan cred with Obama’s, using the example of immigration reform:

It’s fairly significant that Senator McCain worked on the immigration reform legislation while he was pursing the nomination of his party. [He] reached across the aisle despite a heated primary campaign.

What’s hilarious about this statement is that after McCain’s legislation failed, he completely flip-flopped and has now said repeatedly that he does not support immigration reform. Even right-wing blogs see it that way. During the Jan 30 presidential debate, McCain said he would not vote for his own legislation.

In fact, if you take every example from the past 8 years where McCain has acted as a maverick and bucked his party’s position, he has since done a screeching U-turn and now completely supports the party line:

What really amazes me is that they are now claiming that Obama is not bipartisan enough. Yesterday, the McCain campaign released a memo saying:

There has never been a time when Barack Obama has bucked the party line to lead on an issue of national importance.

I don’t get it. I understand why McCain would want to claim that he is different than President Bush and his disastrous Republican policies, but attacking Obama because he hasn’t distanced himself from the Democrats? Who cares?

Besides, it’s obviously false — Obama spoke out against the war in Iraq when Democrats were falling over themselves to support Bush’s position. To me, that’s bucking the party line of both parties on an “issue of national importance”. And you know, Obama was right.

“Vote George W. Bush 2008” – WTF?

I’m not totally sure this isn’t a hoax, but there is a website out there encouraging people to vote for George W. Bush in 2008. How? By writing in his name.

What about term limits? Why those pesky things are man’s law, not god’s.

The God who parted the Red Sea is surely not worried about so-called “term limits”. When you vote your faith you let Almighty God take care of the details.

What makes me suspect it is a hoax are the bumper stickers, which they are selling for $8 a pop, with catchy slogans like

  • Stay the course 2008
  • Third term’s a charm
  • Term limits: man’s law, not God’s

McCain’s ex post facto flip-flop deluxe

Consider the newly passed GI benefits bill.

When it was introduced, McCain tried to kill it.

When the NY Times questioned McCain’s opposition to the bill, he “got a little touchy“.

When the bill came up for a vote Thursday night, McCain didn’t even show up to vote.

So, is anyone surprised when McCain tries to take credit for helping pass the bill?

Late Night Humor

“The Supreme Court has ruled that individuals have the right to carry guns … When the decision was read, it created pandemonium in the court. Justice Scalia had to fire two warning shots to settle people down. And then at the White House, just for fun, Dick Cheney went out on the lawn and peppered a buddy with some birdshot.” –David Letterman

“Here’s good news — Bill Clinton will be out on the campaign trail getting people to vote for Obama. Isn’t that what he was doing for Hillary? But Bill Clinton is campaigning for Obama. President Bush is campaigning for McCain. And I’m thinking, wow, this could really be the year for Ralph Nader.” -David Letterman

“The latest Bloomberg poll shows Obama has a 15-point lead over John McCain. That’s a big lead. He leads in men and in women and with young people, minorities. I think the only place that McCain is beating Obama is in calcium deposits right now.” -Jimmy Kimmel

“The big story out there continues to be the high cost of gasoline. Four bucks a gallon. I have stopped traveling anywhere that is not downhill. Luckily, John McCain has the solution: Fabulous prizes! Who says McCain’s campaign has no new ideas? They have the new idea of offering millions of dollars to people who actually have ideas. It’s just the latest example of John McCain’s brave fight to keep Americans awake while he talks” -Stephen Colbert

“Hillary Clinton is out campaigning with Barack Obama. She says if it goes well, she’ll consider making him as her running mate.” -David Letterman

“Hey, there was an interesting study released today which says that people who live here in the state of California are less convinced that there is a God than the people of any other state in the country. On an unrelated note, more than 800 wildfires here in California are currently burning out of control.” -Jimmy Kimmel

“Arnold Schwarzenegger met John McCain today. And it was a very awkward moment when they shook hands because McCain’s hand broke off.” -Craig Ferguson

Ultimate Irony: Craig and Vitter sponsor Marriage Protection Amendment

The Republicans just reintroduced an amendment to the US Constitution that prohibits gay marriage. This amendment has no chance of passage — the main purpose of reintroducing it is to stir up the conservative base for the upcoming elections.

But the ironic (and fun) part is looking at the list of 10 original sponsors, where you find Senators Larry “wide stance” Craig (who was arrested for soliciting gay sex in an airport restroom), and Senator David “just a massage” Vitter (who hired prostitutes).

These are the people who are trying to uphold the sanctity of marriage?
