John McCain believes in the free market, and what’s more market than Government Giveaways?

Ruben Bolling
© Ruben Bolling

What I find especially interesting about McCain’s proposed car battery contest is that like other poorly-thought-out government incentives, it warps the market. McCain’s contest assumes that the solution is a chemical battery, and ignores equally valid solutions — for example, the hybrid car that is about to be built that uses compressed air tanks instead of a battery to store energy. Note that Obama is guilty of the same problem with ethanol subsidies. Government subsidies should reward goals (like reducing pollution or global warming) not specific (but transient) technologies. For years, the government has been subsidizing the oil companies, and see where that got us.

Like the “gas tax holiday” this is more of a political attention-getting stunt than a real solution.

What the New Yorker Cover was really saying

Just in case you don’t get this, it is a parody of a very famous New Yorker magazine cover from 1976.

Incidentally, Bors did a cartoon with the same theme as the New Yorker cover months ago, and some people think he did it clearer and funnier.

Will McCain make good on his promise to veto every beer?

The website 23/6 makes a disturbing observation for beer drinkers everywhere. In 2000, the US elected two oil men — Bush and Cheney — and gas prices went through the roof.  Now, the Republicans are trying to get us to vote for McCain, whose wife owns of one of the largest beer distributorships in the country. Will the same thing happen to the price of beer? Can we even take that chance?

Making this even more worrysome, according to the Wall Street Journal, McCain and his wife will get a huge payout from the sale of Anheuser-Busch (brewer of Budweiser and other beers) to a foreign corporation, Belgian beverage giant InBev NV (brewer of Stella Artois and Beck). We’ve already suffered because of our dependency on foreign oil; can we afford to be at the mercy of foreign beer brewers?

Maybe when McCain said he would veto every beer it wasn’t a gaffe after all.

New York Republicans Self Destruct in District 13

As Electoral-Vote points out, for Republicans NY-13 is the congressional district that keeps on giving:

  • First, Republican Congressman Vito Fossella tries to prove his love of family values by having two families. Fossella decides not to run for reelection.
  • The Republicans pick Francis Powers to run for his seat, but his son (Francis Powers Junior) announces his intention to run against his dad (as a Libertarian) to prevent him getting elected. Then Francis Powers (senior) suddenly dies from a heart attack.
  • Right at the deadline, the Republicans file the dead Powers as their candidate anyway, because they can’t find anyone else.
  • Finally, the Republicans talk former assemblyman Robert Straniere into running.

Problem over, right?  Until one of the state’s most prominent Republicans, Guy Molinari, announces:

I’m going to do everything in my power to stop him. And if that means defeating him and a Democrat wins, that’s okay, too. I would rather have someone that’s honest and would do what’s right for the country, than support him. … He lies about everything. How do you pick a man like that to go to Congress?

This is proving to be a tough year for Republicans. NY-13 was the last congressional seat in NYC held by the GOP.

How America Was Destroyed, and the nature of Satire

This cartoon is from April, but it is similar in nature to The New Yorker cover:
Tom the Dancing Bug
© Ruben Bolling

Ruben has an excellent article talking about satire and the importance of satirical intent. In his view, the satirical intent of The New Yorker cover is unclear, because you need too much context to understand what is the target of the satire. If the exact same cartoon was drawn by a conservative cartoonist and published in (say) the New York Post, it would be tasteless and offensive. “A cartoon shouldn’t rely on the context of its creator and publisher in order to successfully make its point.”

I can tell the difference, but I’m worried that most people aren’t sophisticated enough to understand.

Liberals do eat their own

In Cannibal Liberals, Neal Gabler looks at how the worst attacks against liberals come from other liberals. But if that’s too many words to read, here’s a cartoon that pretty much conveys the same idea:

Late Night Humor

“Now McCain is coming under fire for comments made by his top economic adviser, former senator Phil Gramm, who called America ‘a nation of whiners’ and said the country is only in a ‘mental recession.’ Just a mental recession. Like the $5 a gallon gas, and the bank kicking you out of your house — that’s all in your mind!” -Jay Leno

“And, for the first time in American history, Congress’s approval rating has fallen to just 9%, 9%. You don’t know how bad that is – the oil companies are at 12%.” -Jay Leno

“President Bush signed a bill giving phone companies immunity for letting the government spy on its customers without a warrant. Isn’t that unbelievable? President Bush said 9/11 changed everything. And you know, he’s right, because violating the Constitution and breaking the law used to mean jail time. Apparently no more.” -Jay Leno

“Jesse Jackson has a bit of a scandal going on right now, which I’ve got to address right up front. Yeah, in case you don’t know, last night Fox News aired video of Jesse Jackson where Jackson was caught saying he wants to cut Barack Obama’s nuts off. That’s what he said. By the way, for the record, this marks the nicest thing ever said about Barack Obama on Fox News.” -Conan O’Brien

“I’m sure you know by now, Jesse Jackson was overheard saying, and I’ll put this more delicately, that he wanted to cut Barack Obama’s testicles off. And Jesse has been on several news programs the last couple of days, explaining what he meant by those comments. Do you need to explain that?” -Jay Leno

“The other day the plane that Barack Obama was on had some mechanical difficulties and was forced to land. Well, the National Transportation Safety Board did an inspection on the plane, and you know what they found? The bolts on the plane were fine, but apparently Jesse Jackson had taken some of the nuts off.” -Jay Leno

“Today Jesse tried to reach out to Obama, and Obama said, ‘Keep your hands where I can see them!'” –Jay Leno

“Jesse Jackson also said he thought Barack Obama was talking down to black people by lecturing them on things like fatherhood and being a responsible husband. Jesse thought it was insulting, not only to him, but to his former mistress and their love child.” -Jay Leno

“I don’t, I don’t think Jesse learned his lesson, today he was overheard saying he wanted to cut off John McCain’s Medicare.” -Jay Leno

“Today’s New York Times has once again raised the issue that John McCain may not be eligible to be President because he is not a natural born U.S. citizen. Apparently, McCain was born outside of the 13 colonies.” -Conan O’Brien

Are we safe yet? – When the government labels everyone a terrorist

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), their terrorist list is growing by an average of 20,000 names a month. The ACLU says that over a million people are already on this list.

Let’s get real. Either we are creating a quarter of a million terrorists every year, or else our government has gone bonkers.  So let’s look and see who our government believes is a terrorist:

  • The government itself — Senator Edward Kennedy is on the list. What makes this even scarier is that he is having trouble getting himself off the list, despite calling the Secretary of DHS personally. Also Congressman John Lewis, Congressman Don Young, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, and the wife of Senator Ted Stevens.
  • Our own military — Major General Vernon Lewis, who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, holds a top-secret security clearance, and received the Distinguished Service Medal (the Army’s highest medal for service). Not to mention Marine Staff Sgt. Daniel Brown, who was blocked from flying while on his way home from his deployment in Iraq, and Air Force Master Sergeant Michelle Green.
  • Airline pilots — Captain Robert Campbell, who not only has flown commercial airplanes for 22 years, but is a Navy veteran.
  • John William Anderson, age 6Infants — including 6-year-old John William Anderson (see image at right) who was born on July 4, 2001 and was first stopped on his way to Disney World. Also the one-year-old daughter of Ingrid Sanden, and even the 11-month-old son of Sarah Zapolsky (can you imagine trying to convince the government that your 11-month-old is not a terrorist?)
  • Nuns — Sister Glenn Anne McPhee, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ secretary for education, who spent 9 months trying to get off the list.
  • Foreign dignitaries — including Nelson Mandela (winner of the Nobel Peace Prize), and Evo Morales, the president of Bolivia.
  • Dead people — including 14 of the 19 highjackers from 9/11 (DHS motto: “better too late than never”), and Saddam Hussein (this one wins the irony award).
  • Anyone with common names — including Gary Smith, Robert Johnson, John Williams, and David Nelson (yes, including the son of “Ozzie and Harriet”).
  • People the government simply doesn’t like — Sarosh Syed, who works for the ACLU, James Moore, author of “Bush’s Brain”, a book critical of the Bush administration, and Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) author of the famous song “Peace Train”, whose London-to-Washington flight was diverted and he was barred from entering the US.

When we start listing 11-month-old infants as terrorists, then I’d have to vote with “bonkers”. When too many people are on the list it makes the list itself worthless, since it doesn’t distinguish between real terrorists and innocent people. Not to mention that many of the people mentioned here were prevented from flying, were strip-searched, or in some cases even beaten, because they were mistakenly identified as terrorists.  It makes you wonder how many people being held in secret prisons (or even not-so-secret ones like Guantanamo Bay) are there by mistake.

Cover Wars – the rebuttals

David Horsey
© David Horsey

What I find ironic is that while the images in The New Yorker cover were completely false (Obama as a Muslim terrorist?), there is video of McCain singing “Bomb Iran”, and Cindy McCain admitted to being addicted to pain killers (after she lied about it). So, the real cover contains falsehoods, while the fake cover contains the truth.

What would be a more equivalent rebuttal would be depicting McCain collaborating with his Viet Cong captors to become a Manchurian candidate. In fact, I dare The New Yorker (or anyone) to publish such a cover. Then we’ll see what kind of response that gets.

UPDATE: Another rebuttal, this time a bit more on the mark:
McCain cover

UPDATE 2: Another rebuttal, but on a different tack. “The newest issue of The Al Qaedain hasn’t even hit newstands and is quickly causing a stir for its graphic portrayal of a patriotic Osama.”

Phil Gramm – Why does he hate America?

ABC news has a story about super-rich American tax cheats who got caught avoiding taxes by setting up bogus shell companies in Liechtenstein.

What’s interesting to me is that the the accounts were set up for the Americans by none other than the giant Swiss bank UBS.  Hmmm. UBS, where have I heard that name before?

Maybe it was Phil Gramm, who before joining the McCain campaign as its “financial guru” was a lobbyist for UBS.  You know, the same Phil Gramm who called America a “nation of whiners”. Not to mention that when he was a Senator he was responsible for the law that led to the Bear Stearns bailout and the current epidemic of mortgage foreclosures.

So, McCain’s main financial advisor is a lobbyist, who works for a foreign corporation, which helps greedy rich Americans break the law, while ruining the economy.  Is this the kind of person you want in charge?

Shouldn’t the media be asking Gramm “Why do you hate America?”
